ACM will be sponsoring a programming tournament during the month of April. Prizes will be best buy gift certificates for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place at $50, $30 and $20 respectively. Specifications are as follows:

Your program must compile on a linux machine. It can be written in any language otherwise.

The program will output a character (r, p, s) to std::out followed by an end line. Each character represents rock, paper and scissors respectively. Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper and paper beats rock. There is a catch however. As a twist if you win with rock it is worth 2 points instead of the traditional 1 point.

After outputting your move your program must read in a character (w, l, d) followed by a space followed by a character (r, p, s) followed by a new line character example:. The first character represents whether you won, lost or tied the current matchup and the second character represents what your opponent threw. Your program can use this information however you desire or may just toss it out as long as it is read in.

Finally, these steps must be placed in a loop that will continue to play the game in this manner until the programs are terminated.

Each person will be pit against all other entries for a specified number of rounds (i.e. best 2 out of 3 or 4 out of 7, etc.) There will be preliminary rounds for you to test your program out in the field every thursday beginning on April 12th. Results will be announced to participants so you can gauge the success of your program. The real match will take place on APRIL 26TH where all scores will start at 0 and the triumphant programs will receive the gift certificates.

All submissions will be sent to: rps@acm.cse.msu.edu
